December Light

December light in St. Paul is rare and special.  The sun is very low in the horizon in the days surrounding the Winter Solstice - just barely peeking above the tree tops. The sunlight passes through the clear cold atmosphere and bathes the world in strong, frontal light.  When, and if, the sun shines in December, I am out exploring the alleyways in my neighborhood in hopes of catching the wonder of this special time of year.  Sunlight is fleeting so I have to hurry.  Subject matter includes whatever I see: fences, sheds, doors, walls, garages, shrubs, tree branches and everything else.  I'm an active observer and enjoy discovery.  There is much to see by simply walking around and looking.                     James Byrne
