The Nautical Series

I'm a multi-disciplinary artist based in St. Paul.  My practice includes video art , filmmaking, and photography.  For this series I photographed the quiet nooks and crannies of a cruise ship in early morning light.  Subject matter includes nautical hardware, light fixtures, handrails, blank walls, equipment - just the functional, mundane things that people usually walk right past without noticing - but are so interesting to me. Documenting these spaces and places became a morning ritual.

I use photo collage to mix photographic and painterly concerns and to expand notions of traditional photography.  I'm happily outside the mainstream of photography.  My process is guided by curiosity and I find joy in simple visual experience.

I print on industrial vinyl in small and large sizes to transform my photographs into photo objects.  Designed with site-responsive installations in mind, this pliable substrate has many options in terms of physical presence in a gallery.  It can be floated inches off the wall, suspended in open space, draped around corners, or hung outdoors.  Like free-hanging textiles, these vinyl works assert a physical autonomy, demanding to be experienced not just as images, but as objects occupying space.

The photo collage technique I use begins with a single photograph that is generally quite plain by itself.  This photograph is then mirrored and multiplied, blossoming into a new seamless image. â€‹â€‹â€‹ Here are some examples from the Nautical Series.                     James Byrne
