The interplay of multiple images to form engaging new visuals is at the heart of my work.  The original photograph becomes a trace element as it merges, fractures, expands, and transforms into a new photographic reality.  There is beauty to be discovered in the light, lines, shapes, colors, textures, and shadows of ordinary objects and places.

These photographs were made in late December, 2023, in my St. Paul neighborhood.  The sun was very low in the horizon in the days surrounding the Winter Solstice - just barely peeking above the tree tops.

The light was frontal and cold weather clear resulting in saturated colors and deep shadows. This lovely light lasts only a few weeks in late December.

The subject matter includes close-ups of fences, sheds, doors, walls, garages and anything else I saw of interest. I enjoy observation and discovery.  There is much to see by simply walking around and looking.                     James Byrne

These photographs are printed non-PVC polyethylene, a fabric-like plastic substrate.  This pliable material flows and shifts.  Hanging loose and deliberately unframed, they are captivating images as well as vibrant objects that seem to float on the wall.
